Benefits of Electric vs Manual Patient Lifts

When in need of a patient lift, one of the first things to consider is whether or not a manual or electric model would better meet your needs. This article weighs the pros and cons of each.

Patient Lifts can be a useful tool for individuals needing assistance transferring from one place to another (e.g. from bed to chair/bed to commode). Depending on an individual's needs, they may benefit from using either an electric or manual patient lift. Manual Patient Lifts feature their own unique benefits. Manual Patient lifts are generally a more affordable and lighter weight option. Its lighter frame and ability to disassemble make it ideal for transportation of the lift to locations outside of the home. Manual Patient lifts adjust height by use of a hydraulic pump (similar to a car jack) so you won’t have to worry about charging any batteries. Manual patient lifts can be more difficult for the caregiver, especially if they are alone in their care.

While manual lifts work great in their own regard, the Electric Patient lift can be more ideal for caregiver’s specifically, allowing them to independently guide the patient during their transfer while simultaneously adjusting the height of the lift with just the push of a button. This allows transportation, especially bed to chair/commode transfers, to be much less difficult, dangerous, and timely. While electric lifts are generally more expensive, they tend to last longer and are the recommended style of lift, especially for single caregiver use. Regardless of which style of Patient Lift fits your specific needs, it is important that instructions are clear, and correct patient lift technique is used in order to ensure the safety of both the patient and the healthcare provider. Which style of patient lift best fits your needs? If you have any questions regarding Patient Lifts or any other product you may be interested in, please contact us at 1-866-201-3829.
