Alternating Pressure Mattresses and Avoiding Pressure Wounds/Ulcers

Did you know it can take as little as 15 minutes for the beginning stages of a pressure ulcer to begin developing? Pressure wounds/ulcers happen when someone is unable to move themselves in bed enough to ensure proper blood flow. Pressure wounds are most commonly found in body locations that include bone that is close under the skin, so these areas should be monitored. (e.g. Heels, hips, elbows).

Official pressure injury guidelines suggest that an individual with decreased bed mobility should be re-positioned after a maximum time of 2 hours lying in bed. If an individual is in a seated position, or if a pressure wound already exists it is recommended to reposition every 15-30 minutes. Repositioning this often can be tiring for a healthcare provider as well as the individual seeking assistance. Luckily, the alternating pressure air mattress uses a pump that constantly redistributes body weight and completes its cycle every 10-12 minutes. This movement of pressure allows the patient and healthcare provider to conserve energy throughout the day without worrying about the development of bed sores. The amount of pressure in the bed is also able to be adjusted based on patient comfort or positioning.
